How to Crochet Sedge Crochet Stitch?

Blog banner (12).png
Sedge Crochet Stitch

The sedge stitch is a very nice and tidy crochet stitch pattern. The stitches are blended in, and it’s almost impossible to tell where the stitch starts and where it ends.

This is a unique crochet technique that adds texture but does not add too much volume to the finished crochet work.

The sedge stitch is a tighter stitch with fewer holes in the pattern; therefore, it is an ideal stitch for blankets, sweaters, and scarves.

The sedge stitch is also good for crochet hot pads or scrubs, which need some thickness.

With the tight stitch, it is perfect for crocheting cup holders to keep your hands from a hot cup.

This stitch works in multiples of three plus one. The base row has an additional two chains. This is, actually, a very easy crochet pattern.

There are only 3 crochet stitches you need to know for the sedge pattern. Single crochet, half double crochet, and double crochet.

All you need to know is how to work chains, single crochets, and double crochets.

The reason for the thickness and volume with this stitch is that you are putting the single crochet, the half double crochet, and the double crochet all in one single chain stitch.

Remember to relax and loosen your grip as you crochet. Keep consistent tightness throughout the project to have a consistent flow of stitches.

Foundation & Row 1

Foundation – chain multiple of 3, plus 1, plus you will need to add 2 for the base chain. For this example, chain 18.

Make 1 half double crochet in the 3rd chain from the hook, the previous chains count as 1 single crochet, and now make 1 double crochet in the same chain. Next, * skip 2 chains and make 1 single crochet in the next chain, then 1 half double crochet in the same chain, and 1 double crochet in the same chain. Now, skip 2 chains and make 1 single crochet, 1 half double crochet, and 1 double crochet in the same chain. Repeat * to * until 3 chains are left at the end of the row. Finish the row by making single crochet at the end chain. To start the next row, chain 1, turn.

With the hooks, yarns & the pom-pom maker, you are all set to crochet ---> a hat with a pom-pom! Image the joy of finishing the hat and the happy face of the lucky recipient wearing the hat!

Priceless!
